The 2020 Presidential race in the United States is sure to be one for the books. In spite of the devastating 2016 loss for the democrats, the recent announcements of several very viable candidates for the 2020 elections is both surprising and exciting! Keep reading for my top picks thus far which have announced their 2020 bids.
Cory Booker is a US senator from New Jersey and announced his Presidential campaign on the first day of Black History Month (February). He is a progressive senator and stands for criminal reform policies and other policies aiming to benefit communities of color and working Americans.
Kamala Harris announced her candidacy in a January rally in Oakland during Martin Luther King Jr. Day. If Harris secures the nomination, she would be both the first African-American AND Asian-American women to become the nominee of a major party. Progressive policies she backs include Medicare for all and the legalization of marijuana.
Elizabeth Warren leans a little less left than Bernie Sanders, but she’s still a great choice. Her proven track record outside of the Senate includes helping working families by making debt and finance laws fairer. Unlike Bernie, she is a self-declared capitalist and, well, a woman. Despite a bumpy start (see: “Pocahontas”), Elizabeth Warren definitely is an expert on the need for fiscal policy reform for the working class.
Bernie Sanders is the famous Vermont Senator who was made famous by his socialist ideals and close-loss in the 2016 Presidential primaries to Hillary Clinton. I don’t know if I expected Sanders to run following his last loss, but I do think he will do a good job if he wins the primaries. He’s probably the farthest left of the group, but means very well and will definitely bring welcome change to the White House.
