Adam Sandler’s 2004 hit “50 First Dates” had me beaming with pride and in stitches laughing at many underlying local nuances. More than a decade later, I still say that this is one of my favorite movies, and definitely one of the best starring Adam Sandler. These are some things you might not have caught the first time around, but I highly encourage you to kick back and have another watch!
About the Movie
Adam Sandler plays a bachelor named Henry Roth. In this role, the playboy sets his heart on a local girl named Lucy (played by drew Barrymore). Although all seems perfect, Lucy suffers from a brain defect that effectively wipes out her memory each evening. Henry Roth spends a good chunk of the film convincing Lucy to fall in love with him over and over again.
The Beach Boys
The song “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” by the Beach Boys plays a significant role in the movie- Lucy sings the song every day that she meets Henry Roth. When he final takes the initiative to go on his big sailing trip, Lucy’s dad gives Henry a tape with the song on it. Eventually, he turns back and makes Lucy his wife, knowing the gift was a sign of acceptance.
Spam and Eggs
At the fictional Hukilau Café, Henry Roth orders a coffee while he’s waiting for a tow for his boat. Sue, the waitress, insists that “reeses and Gatorade” is not a real breakfast, and orders him up a plate of spam and eggs. Although it might sound funny, spam and eggs is one of my favorite breakfast meals when cooked right! If you want a taste, I highly suggest visiting the real Hukilau Café in Laie, right off of the highway.
Sea Life Park
In the movie, Adam Sandler plays a veterinarian at Sea Life Park. This is actually a real place, offering fun and educational exhibits. I highly recommend a day trip whenever you’re in the Waimanalo area! You can even go swimming with dolphins (if you dare).
