The Best of the Ala Moana Food Court

The Makai food court in the Ala Moana mall is truly a culinary experience. Located close to the beach, the name Makai actually means seaward. It’s the perfect spot to catch some ono bites after a long day at the beach!

Makai, coming from the Hawaiian words ma (in, by, on) and kai (ocean) is a food court in the Ala Moana Center, just steps away from some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. In addition to world-class shopping, the expansive variety of dining options is something that should not be missed. Here are some of my all-time favorites!

Jollibee

Jollibee, a favorite fast food option in the Philippines, has a great location in the Makai food court. Here you can get yourself burgers, chicken or my personal favorite- the world-famous Jollibee spaghetti. Known as the KFC of the PH, their crispy and juicy chicken is always best washed down with a cold sprite.

Charleys Philly Steaks

When you’re in a tropical paradise but for some reason find yourself missing the mainland, Charleys Philly Cheese Steaks is the best way to go. There’s nothing like that soft bun, thinly-sliced beef, cheese and peppers all wrapped up in a perfect tin foil packaging to satisfy the soul quite like these sandwiches. Try their gourmet fries and natural lemonade while you’re at it!

Naniwa

My usual weapon of choice, Naniwa serves a scrumptious array of Japanese noodle dishes. Whether you’re craving hot ramen, cold ramen, yakisoba or fresh gyozas, Naniwa has got you covered. My all-time go to is the Lime Kimchee Ramen, which will leave you feeling all the right amounts of citrusy and fermented.

Shirokiya

Shirokiya is a special shout out on this list. The Japanese department store of your dreams, Shirokiya is a multi-level facility housing everything from a used book store to beauty products and so much more. The real magic, however, happens upstairs at the Japanese Food Court. Although it’s hard to choose, the vast arrays of sushi, hot meals and desserts is sure to please your entire clan. I suggest starting off with some fresh sashimi, finding the takoyaki stand and having a few, and finally finish your culinary tour off with an ube bubble tea!
